English Language Arts 9

Welcome to my Grade 9 Homework page. Here you will find any important dates for tests, assignments, projects, etc., as well as handouts that may have been missed in class.

Well, it's now the 5th of June! Where does the time go? Students should now be doing two things. Ensuring that you have all pieces of assessment submitted in your classes and preparing for your final exams.

To help make the studying process easier, and because I fear that some students may have lost earlier handouts (you know who you are ;) ), I have included here notes from our earlier units and a study guide for your final exam.

 Flipped

Our last novel study of the year is a book entitled Flipped. It is the story of a boy and girl who grow up across the street from one another. The major piece of assessment for this unit is a booklet containing a number of graphic organizers and journal entries. If you have lost your booklet, you can access it here: Flipped Work Booklet

 Short Story Unit Test

Students have been aware of the upcoming short story unit test happening this Friday, Feb. 21st. This test will take the form of an unseen short story which students will read and answer questions on. The questions will be largely selected response with two longer answer questions. Possible topics include conflict, theme, plot structure, point of view, characterization, symbols, suspense, irony, etc.

At the beginning of the unit all students were given a study booklet for this unit. If you have lost yours, you may find it here.

 Re-test

There will be a re-test scheduled for Monday Oct. 28 for students who failed or struggled on the 1st unit test. This test is completely optional and will be written either lunchtime or after school on that day. If you choose to write your test after school, you will be responsible for making your own arrangements to get home. If your new mark is higher than the original, than both marks will be averaged together to create a new grade. If your mark on the re-test is lower, than the original grade will  stand. Any other questions, feel free to come see me.

  Research/Sources

Students should be well into the researching phase for their persuasive essays. Remember that students are required to have at least FIVE separate sources used and MUST cite them properly within their work. Students will also have to compile a bibliography at the end of their essay.

Here is a list of instructions for citing your references and doing a bibliography:

  Persuasive Essay/Speech

Students should have a topic selected for their persuasive essay/speech by tomorrow, Oct. 11. Students will have an opportunity to do some research on their topic in class, but will also have to do some research at home.

  Independent Novel Study

Book Talk Presentations will begin next week on Oct.  15. Students will be required to sign up for a presentation time between then and Oct. 24.

Students should be well into reading independent novels by now. You should be filling in your book talk sheets as you go along in order to make organizing your thoughts easier. If you have lost your sheet, you can print off another copy from here.
Book Talk Form

Don't forget, in addition to filling in the book talk, you will also have to give a 3-5 minute presentation to the class about your book. It would be a good idea to include the info you recorded on your book talk sheet in your presentation.
